
Start with where the door sits, not with the price list
Nine out of ten timber questions answer themselves once you say where the door goes. A bedroom door two metres inside an air-conditioned house lives an easy life. A front door on a west-facing porch with a 600mm overhang takes afternoon sun, sideways rain twice a year and a humidity swing of thirty per cent between March and November. Those are different problems, and paying for the harder timber in the easy position is money spent on nothing.
So before you compare species, write down three things: is the opening covered, which way does it face, and is there air-conditioning on one side. Bring that to us and the conversation gets short.
The species we actually stock
Chengal
The heavyweight. Naturally durable, extremely resistant to termites and rot, and dense enough that it dulls tooling. We use it for external frames, security leaves and framed-and-ledged gates. It is expensive, it is heavy, and it will outlive the house. Chengal darkens to a deep grey-brown if left unfinished outdoors, which some clients want and others hate, so decide early.
Balau
Close to chengal in durability at a slightly friendlier price, with a more even reddish-brown colour. Good for external frames and exposed leaves. Balau moves a little more than chengal, so we oversize the perimeter section on wide leaves.
Merbau
The all-rounder, and the timber most Malaysian doors have been made from for fifty years. Stable, straight-grained, works cleanly and takes a finish beautifully. Its one habit worth knowing: merbau bleeds a rust-coloured tannin when it gets wet, which will stain a light-coloured wall or a white tile threshold. Seal it properly and it is a non-issue.
Nyatoh
Softer, lighter, warmer in tone, and the sensible choice for internal panel and carved doors. It carves cleanly, which is why our carvers reach for it. Not for external use.
Kempas and Sepetir
Good mid-range internal timbers. Kempas is harder and heavier with an interlocked grain; Sepetir is easier to work and takes a stain evenly. Both are honest choices for a house full of bedroom doors where the budget matters.
Engineered cores are not a compromise
There is a persistent idea that a solid one-piece slab is always better. For anything above about 1100mm wide, it is the opposite. A wide solid slab wants to cup and twist as it takes on moisture from one face, and no amount of good timber prevents it. An engineered core - a hardwood perimeter with a lattice or laminated interior and balanced faces - stays flat because the internal stresses cancel each other out.
Every pivot door we build is engineered for exactly this reason. So are most designer leaves. The visible surface is still real timber; the difference sits where nobody looks.
Moisture content is the number that matters
Species arguments are less important than drying. Timber machined at eighteen per cent moisture and installed in an air-conditioned house will shrink, and the panel will pull a white line out of the stile where the finish cracks. Everything we machine has been kiln dried to ten to twelve per cent and rested afterwards, and we will not shortcut that for a tight programme. If a supplier cannot tell you their moisture target, that tells you something.
A short version
External and exposed: chengal or balau, oiled, with a generous overhang. External but covered: merbau, sealed. Internal, painted or stained: nyatoh, kempas or sepetir. Wide or tall anything: engineered core with the timber you like on the face. And whatever you pick, ask what the moisture content was on the day it was cut.
