Filament bulb glowing warmly against a dark ceiling

Flicker is the electrical system talking to you. Most of what it says is trivial. Occasionally it is urgent. The trick is knowing which conversation you are in, so here is how our wiremen think through it, in the order they check.

One light flickering: almost always the cheap stuff

If a single fluorescent tube flickers or struggles to start, it is the starter or the tube itself, both replaceable for a few ringgit. If a single LED downlight flickers, its driver is dying; drivers are consumables in our climate and rarely outlast the LED. A lamp that flickers when you wiggle the bulb has a tired lampholder. None of this is dangerous, though lampholders should be swapped before they char.

LEDs flickering on a dimmer

Older dimmers were designed for filament bulbs and misbehave with LED loads, especially cheap ones. The fix is a trailing-edge dimmer rated for LEDs, or dimmable-rated bulbs. Annoying, not alarming.

A whole room or circuit flickering: pay attention

When every light on one switch or one breaker blinks together, the connection feeding that circuit is loose somewhere: at the switch, a junction box, or the breaker terminal. Loose connections arc, arcing makes heat, and heat in a junction box is how ceiling fires start. This is a call-the-wireman fault, not a someday fault.

The whole house flickering: act today

House-wide flicker, lights dimming when the aircond starts, some sockets reading strangely high while others sag, or a tingling feeling from metal appliances, can point to a deteriorating neutral connection. A broken neutral can push 400-volt-range imbalances through appliances and is genuinely dangerous.

House-wide flicker plus warm switch plates or a fishy smell near the DB board is our "we will come today" combination. Say those words on the phone and we reshuffle the schedule.

Is it even your house?

Before booking anyone, ask a neighbour. If their lights dip at the same moments, the cause is on the utility side and the right call is TNB's Careline at 15454, which costs you nothing. Flicker during heavy thunderstorms that settles afterwards is usually grid-side too.

What we do when we come

A flicker call gets the boring, thorough treatment: thermal scan of the DB board, torque check on breaker terminals, voltage logging on the affected circuit, and inspection of the junction points the circuit passes through. Most cases end with one retightened connection and a small bill. The ones that end with a rewiring conversation are the ones where we find sixty-year-old rubber insulation crumbling in the ceiling, and you will see the evidence yourself before any big number is mentioned.
